Heavy Horse Experience Days
At Coldcroft Farm we host the Coldcroft Shire horses, Millie and Willam who are traditional heavy horses.
The Shires are used by the farm to maintain the land and pasture and they are made available for you to enjoy as part of a heavy horse experience day provided by Jamie. Learn about the history of the Shire horse, how their role on the farm has changed over the years and how to correctly handle, harness and work them.
Our heavy horse experience days are unique and personal, tailored to each individual, we can guarantee no day is the same!
Our heavy horse experience days are ideally suited for up to two people, activities include:
- Preparing the stable
- Calling the horses in from the field
- Grooming and general care
- Understanding the purpose and fit of the harness
- Basic long reining techniques and practising these in the sand school.
- Working your horse out in the fields doing seasonally appropriate work
- Washing down your horse and preparing them for night time

Our equine facilities are excellent.
This is not a show yard or a DIY business, it is a home yard.
However, we make this yard and its facilities available to friends and neighbours. All we ask is a donation to a local charity.
We have a 60 x 20m school with an excellent surface, flood lights, poles and jumps are also available.
There is ample space to park trailers and a lorry (up to 7.5t) and you can use the stable area to tack-up wash down.
The school is available to hire Monday to Saturday, by prior arrangement, please contact us.

Bring your horse on holiday!
Guests can not only enjoy a relaxing stay in our cottage but bring their horse along to, enjoy the scenic rides from the farm, hack down the road to the local pub for a pint or get working in our sand school. Coldcroft Farm has access to beautiful hacking on May Hill and direct access to the Forest of Dean Greenways, the Huntley route. A field shelter can be made available in a paddock for any horse staying at the farm.
