Carving Letters in Wood Tuition Courses
Delivered in groups of no more than two students at a time. Learn the basic principles of how to carve in wood a sign on this one-day introductory letter carving course. The main purpose of the course is to share with you the necessary knowledge and confidence to start carving your own signs.
In this letter carving course you will:
- Learn about the tools you use and how to sharpen and care for them.
- Learn about the principles of letter carving, from choosing the font to selecting the right wood.
- Have plenty of hands-on experience to begin carving your own small project.
Jamie Alcock will be your tutor. He is a craftsman in Letter Carving, having worked with one of the most prestigious public schools in the country, Harrow School, as well as many churches and commercial projects including pub signs. Jamie was taught by Chris Pye, who is well known for his wood carving skills and work.
We hope you will enjoy the course and later on appreciate the quiet satisfaction that comes from using this traditional skill.
If you would like to learn about letter carving in more depth, we can also offer a two day course.
What to expect?
Following a brief introduction and necessary safety related instructions, the rest of the course is ‘hands-on’ instruction - the use of sharp tools is required.
You will work under the direct supervision of Jamie. Tools will be provided for the course.
The courses start at 9am and finish at 5pm, with unlimited tea and coffee as you go. Lunch is served in the farm house.
